Deborah Augustin is a media consultant, writer and teacher who was born and raised in Malaysia. She has a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MFA from Western Michigan University. Since 2015, she has taught writing with a focus on migration and place. From 2018 - 2021 she worked in independent media where she oversaw audience research, fundraising, and membership growth. Currently, she is the Flash Editor at Perigee, Apogee Journal’s digital vertical, where she commissions and edits flash writing.
For the last two years, she has worked as a campaigner with a Malaysian non-profit working with film as a tool for change. She has extensive ties to Malaysian civil society through past collaborations, partnerships and volunteer work. Through her professional and volunteer work she has facilitated democracy classrooms, curated speakers for the Women’s March Malaysia, and run campaigns to support human rights defenders and artists under attack.
